Three Types of Semen

Insemination can be performed using three types of canine semen: fresh, fresh-chilled, and frozen.

  • Fresh−Fresh ejaculated canine semen has the longest viability.
  • Fresh-Chilled−Fresh-chilled semen involves the dilution of ejaculated semen in special canine extenders which contain egg yolk and buffers that protect the sperm during the cooling process.
  • Frozen−Frozen semen is stored in liquid nitrogen at the extreme temperature of -196˚C. Semen is preserved in a frozen state in either “straws” or “pellets.” Also know as Cryopreservation or freezing.

  • Fresh−Same Day Courier Service

Same day couriers service for fresh or cooled semen to your area is based on geographic location and availability. Contact us for details and scheduling.

  • Fresh-Chilled
  • Frozen

Predetermined collection and shipping days are available upon request.

  • Exports

We ship frozen semen anywhere in the United States and Worldwide. Shipping information for cryopreserved semen within the USA and internationally to other countries, please see the information under “Semen Freezing and Storage”.

Exports can take some time to be ready for shipping due to various countries having specific health requirements and semen collection conditions. We can help you to meet all the requirements necessary for the shipment and liaise with veterinary, reproductive staff, or a reproductive facility clinic to ensure your dog has had all the necessary treatments before and after the collection date.

Semen Storage

Preserving semen at fridge temperatures facilitates the shipment of canine semen either within the United States or internationally to Canada or Mexico. It is a great alternative to shipment of either the stud dog to the bitch or vice versa when each are located at a distance from each other, which can be very costly and impractical.

Semen Freezing

Cryopreservation (freezing) allows for long-term semen storage; breeders can buy and store semen from a prestigious stud Bully and save it for the ideal dam and/or broodbitch match. Frozen semen is stored in specialized liquid nitrogen tanks which are maintained appropriately and may keep the semen viable indefinitely at a freeze center, ready for use or shipping at your desired timeframe.

Frozen semen is:

  • Shipped in a special vapor shipper from our distribution facility. (Note: Vapor shipper will hold semen for up to 2 weeks)
  • Stored in liquid nitrogen at the attending reproductive facility or veterinarian’s clinic until the dam and/or broodbitch is in heat and ready for insemination.
  • Frozen semen can be stored indefinitely in properly protocol maintained liquid nitrogen tanks.
  • Stored in a Certified Freeze Center.
  • Collected semen which may have been collected by a number of methods may be stored and frozen in cryovials and/or straws in liquid nitrogen-filled tanks at a Freeze Center.

Frozen semen gives access to top quality bloodlines.  As breeders, we have the ability to export frozen semen from our Lion’s Paw Kennel throughout the United States and the world. In addition, storing frozen semen provides opportunities to breed studs that are: not available for collection, not actively participating in competition(s), has been neutered, or has passed away.

An important factor, you will not need to bring your bitch dog to us for breeding with frozen semen. Your veterinarian or reproductive specialist can perform the insemination.  We recommend a vet that has experience and understands the timing and handling necessary for successful artificial insemination.

Importance of Semen Handling & Assessment

No matter what type of semen (fresh, fresh-chilled, or frozen) or the method of artificial insemination that is used to deposit the semen, careful and skillful handling of the semen is essential. Furthermore, assessment of a sample of semen, by a qualified and knowledgeable professional prior to insemination plays a critical role in the maximization of pregnancy rates.

Artificial insemination is a very useful reproductive management tool. It allows the transport of semen both nationally and internationally. Management of both the stud dog and bitch is critical to maximize both pregnancy rate and litter size after artificial insemination. Female dog must have a current and “in good standing” health certificate and bloodline submitted prior to insemination.

General Ordering & Shipping

Tracking information will be available upon purchase.

How is frozen semen transported?

Shipping anyway is possible. Frozen Semen can be stored in a “dry shipper” container using liquid nitrogen vapors that is capable maintaining the appropriate temperature for up to two weeks. This enables a transportation time to ship anywhere within the US and its territories or internationally.

Artificial Insemination

It is the responsibility of the client to ensure that a board-certified Theriogenologist is utilized for artificial insemination of their female dog. A Theriogenologist is a specialized veterinarian who has received advanced training in animal reproductive health. They are experts in the treatment and management of reproductive disorders in animals, and their specialized knowledge and training are critical to ensuring the success of any breeding program.

Artificial insemination involves the insertion of semen into the female dog’s reproductive tract via non-natural methods. The success of this procedure is dependent on various factors such as timing, technique, and the quality of the reproductive material. Without the proper expertise, there is a risk of unsuccessful conception, complications during the pregnancy, or delivery of unhealthy offspring.

Therefore, it is recommended that you seek the services of a certified Theriogenologist when considering artificial insemination. They will provide you with robust science-based advice, assess the reproductive health of your female dog, and evaluate the quality of the semen to be used. Their expertise will increase the chances of a successful pregnancy and whelping of healthy puppies.

In conclusion, the acquisition of a board-certified Theriogenologist is the responsibility of the client; this will ensure the health of the female dog and offspring. By working together with a reputable Theriogenologist, you can rest assured that your breeding program is in safe and capable hands.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

For breeders experiencing infertility with a stud, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may lead to a successful pregnancy. This type of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is most helpful when there are male infertility issues. A trained professional provider injects sperm into an egg to aid conception. Pregnancy may happen after an embryo transfer.

Embryo Transfer

Lion’s Paw Kennels maintains its own recipient pack. Embryo transfers are done on-site, and we also handle embryos shipped in for implantation.
